Teresa Nordahl of Nowthen and Steve Nordahl of Albertville would like to announce the engagement of their daughter Kayla Nordahl to Ben Mayer, son of James and Lisa Mayer of Marcus, IA. Kayla is a 2009 graduate of Elk River High School and a 2013 graduate North Dakota State University where she earned her degree in Biotechnology and Microbiology. Kayla is currently pursuing her Medical Laboratory Scientist certification. Kayla is employed by Sanford Medical Center in Sheldon, IA. Ben is a 2008 graduate of Marcus-Meirden-Cleghorn High School and a 2012 graduate of University of South Dakota where he earned his degree in Business Marketing. Ben raises cattle on the family farm. A December wedding is planned in Marcus, IA. The couple will reside in Marcus.

George Dietz Mon, 20 Oct 2014 15:31:33 +0000 DietzFormer Elk River grocer George Dietz died peacefully at his home at St. Therese Southwest in Hopkins at the age of 90 on Oct. 16, 2014.
George was born and raised in Carver, Mn, graduated from Chaska High School and attended Minneapolis Business College where he got a degree in accounting.
He was a World War II veteran who served in the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion in Europe, earning a Purple Heart. After the war George bought a grocery store on Main Street in Elk River and started with six employees. Eventually he built Elk River’s first large supermarket, called George’s Super Valu, a store with 150 employees.
Later George built a second grocery store in Rogers before selling both stores and retiring in 1980.
George was very active in Elk River throughout his 30 year stay in the community. He served as president of the Elk River Chamber of Commerce, was a long time board director for the Bank of Elk River, a member of the Elk River Rotary Club and VFW and a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. He was named a Paul Harris fellow by the Rotary Club. He and Don McRae started the Elk River chapter of the Lion’s Club. George also served as the Lion’s Club president.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, AnnRose, parents George and Anna Dietz, brother Leo and daughter Rosemary.
He is survived by son John (Jayne) and daughters Mary (Paul) Barthel, Georgia, Joan (Jim) Tidball, Fran (Jerry) Deziel and Susan (Charlie) Danielson. He is also survived by grandchildren Stacey, Lindsey, Jason, Matthew, Kyle, Melanie, Jonathan, Robby and Sam. Great-grandchildren include Lauren, Wyatt, Claire, Evelyn, Colton, Logan and Jocelyn.
The funeral was at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church at 13505 Excelsior Blvd. in Minnetonka on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior at the church. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Andrew’s Catholic School in Elk River.

Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother

Adeline Christine Koelfgen, 96, of Big Lake passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Oct. 3, 2014.
Adeline was born in Hopkins, MN on Oct. 14, 1917.
She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred Westphal, seven sisters and three brothers.
Survived by one sister June Bird of Hopkins; daughters Carol (Jeff) LaMont of Elk River and Conni (Terry) Douglas of Bloomington; granddaugthers Christine Hansen of San Diego, CA, Mishawn (Jerry) Stewart of Elk River, Marni (Lance) Helgerson of Circle Pines, MN, Jennifer (Scott) Arnold of Prior Lake, MN, Justine (Brian Schmit) LaMont of Big Lake; great-grandchildren Candice (John Enger) Hanson, Ashley (Paul) Kemmetmueller, Lindsay Hamilton, Anthony Secord, Kylea LaMont, Brian Arnold and Reed Helgerson and one great great-grandson Jack Enger and many nieces and nephews.
Adelines most important thing in life was her family. She enjoyed gardening, movies, music, baking and sewing. She will be missed.
Service will be held at Elk River Lutheran Church on Main St., Elk River at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, 2014. Please visit for memorial information.

Lawrence Toth Jr., age 74, of Elk River passed away.
40-year employee of Hoffman Engineering, but his heart was in farming for a lifetime.
Preceded by his parents, Lawrence and Gertrude; brother, Henry.
Survived by his wife of 53 years, Irene; children, Dennis (Vicky Olson) and Julie (Steve) Engelmeyer; grandchildren, David, Andrea and Nicholas; siblings, Vernon (Audrey), Freddie (Darwin) Schuur, Gertrude Sakry, Steve (Ev), Nita (Richard) Millett; other relatives and many friends.
Visitation on Thursday, Oct. 16 from 5-8 p.m. at Dares Funeral Home, 805 Main St., Elk River. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, Oct. 17 at noon at the Catholic Church of St. Andrews, 566 4th St., Elk River, with visitation one hour prior to service.

Jennifer Ann Dittberner (Drewes), age 41, graduated from Elk River High School in 1992. Jennifer married Donald Dittberner Jr. in 1998. They raised their two children, Kaitlyne, age 17, and Dustin, age 13, in Otsego, Minnesota. Jennifer was employed by Crystal Cabinets, Metro Travel, Outdoor News and Accurate Home Care. Jennifer loved spending time outdoors with her family.
Jennifer is preceded in death by her grandparents, Beverly and Raymond Zincke, Anne and Wayne Drewes.
Jennifer will be deeply missed by her parents, Darrel and Rebecca Drewes; siblings, Matt and Denise Drewes; and nieces, Trinity, Haily and Lily. A special thank you to Mike Bartlett for being there for Jennifer in her time of need.
A Celebration of Life will begin at noon on Oct. 18 at Elk River Baptist Church, 1800 8th Street, Elk River, (763) 441-2080.

Marvel Adeline (Christianson) Grams passed away on Oct. 9, 2014 in Cambridge, MN at the age of 91.
Marvel was born on August 27, 1923 in Santigo, MN to Melvin and Alma Christianson. Marvel graduated from Big Lake High School. On October 18, 1946 she married Howard Grams at Hope Lutheran Church in Orrock. During their married life Howard and Marvel lived in Minneapolis, Spencer Brook and Zimmerman. Marvel had recently moved to Sterling Point Senior Living in Princeton.
Marvel and Howard were married for 48 years and were blessed with five children. Her loving husband Howard died in 1995.
Marvel worked at an ironing board factory, Federal Cartridge, Zimmerman Cafe, Elim Home and finally as a cook at Zimmerman Elementary School.
Marvel was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Crown, she also attended Faith Community Lutheran Church of Zimmerman.
She loved to entertain and spend time with people, she was a great cook and baker and will be remembered for her generous hospitality and never letting anyone leave without a treat. Marvel enjoyed her Bible study and Birthday club as well as working in her flower garden and playing cards.
She enjoyed spending time with and greatly loved her children and grandchildren. Marvel loved holidays and celebrations.
She will be sorely missed by her many family and friends.
Marvel is now with our wonderful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and also her loving husband Howard and her first born son Cameron as well the many friends and family who have gone before her.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren; Katie (Grams) Lorge, Kevin Grams, Jessica Grams, Adam Grams, Gillian (Norris) Twite, Amber Norris, Tyler Tretbar, Cole Tretbar and Austin Tretbar.
Survivors include sons Curt (Connie) Grams of Elk River, Craig Grams of Groton, SD and daughters Connie (Dale) Norris of La Crosse, WI and Carol (Scott) Tretbar of Zimmerman, 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Caroline Christianson, Helen Benson, Lucille Grams, Joyce Immer, Joann Grams and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Merrill and Helen Mae Grams.
Funeral service was Monday. October 13, 2014 11 am at Zion Lutheran Church in Crown, MN. Visitation was Sunday, October 12, 2014 4-7 p.m. at Dares Funeral Home, 805 Main St. NW, Elk River, MN. Interment was in the Zion Lutheran of Crown cemetery in Crown, MN.

Loren J. Koehler, age 88, lifelong resident of Nowthen, MN died Saturday Oct. 11, 2014 peacefully in his home.
Loren was born on June 9, 1926 to Martha (Whitlef) and Ernest Koehler in Burns.
He served in the US Army from 1944-46 as a rifleman with the 5th Cavalry Regiment in Japan.
On Sept. 14, 1950 he married Donna Lehn at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Elk River.
Loren was lifetime farmer on the familys century farm in Nowthen he also worked at Federal Cartridge. He was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church.
Preceded in death by his wife, Donna (Lehn); son, Scott; grandchildren, Jamie Koehler, Joshua and Jason Lanoue.
Survived by children, Michael (Bobbie), Joseph (Arlette), Susan, Linda, Lori (Perry), Gary (Deb), Vickie, Steve (Chris), and Todd (Lara); 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; other family and many friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was at Noon on Wednesday Oct. 15, 2014, at the Catholic Church of Saint Andrews, with 1 hour of visitation prior to the service. Visitation was also on Tuesday, Oct 14, 2014 from 5-8 p.m.
Pallbearers were Craig Koehler, Jacob Koehler, Keith Koehler, Peyton Koehler, Nicholas Goth, Jenny Lanoue, Kristy Norman, Bjorn Lundstrom, and Carol Schumacher.
