The Star News, a free-distribution newspaper, is delivered each week to nearly 26,000 homes and businesses. The newspaper market and readership area covers the communities within the boundaries of the Elk River Area School District, including Elk River, Otsego, Rogers and Zimmerman; Hassan, Livonia, Burns and Big Lake townships; as well as parts of Albertville, Dayton and Ramsey.
The newspaper is a past recipient of the CVC Gold Standard Award. This award was given to fewer than 100 of the more than 3,200 publications that were audited across the country for receivership, readership and impact on people’s purchasing decisions. This means the Star News gets delivered, the people who get it read it, and they use it to help purchase products and services from advertisers. The Star News’ combined score was 20 percent higher than the national average.
“This is great news for our newspaper and our advertisers,” said Jim Boyle, editor of the Star News. “It’s confirmation that our hard work pays off.”
The Star News is proud to be a community-focused newspaper with a commitment to fair, accurate, ethical reporting. The staff strives to provide hard-hitting news, sports and human interest stories that are balanced together to produce a state and nationally recognized, award-winning, free-distribution publication.
The newspaper was established in 1872 by the Arthur Newman Dare family. Three generations of Dares later — starting with Arthur and then Laurence Albee Dare and lastly Charles Fournier Dare — ECM Publishers purchased the paper in 1982.
