Mainstreams: 2016 A Year in Review

 in Elk River. Ben Kelley, a 90-year-old veteran of the Marine Corps who lives in Otsego, and Buddy, a 19-year-old quarter horse gelding, shared a moment during a visit in October by Mel and Jeanette Beaudry to Angels on Main in Elk River. They bring horses to the adult day center each fall. Five-year-old Braxton Berthiaume, of Becker, won his age group in the kids tractor pull event in July at the 
Sherburne County Fair in Elk River. Kindergartners Erin Auel (left) and Sophia Twite (center) joined other students in saying the Pledge of Allegiance in November during a Veterans Day program at Meadowvale Elementary School in Elk River. Greg Mayer and his granddaughter, Katie Schlichting, watched as a helicopter landed during the Night to Unite event in August at Ridges of Rice Lake in Elk River. The seniors took on Elk River High School’s classes en route to 
winning a tug-of-war challenge during homecoming in September.
 It was one of the featured activities at a 
pep fest in the school gymnasium. Robert Kampa, of St. Cloud, competed in bocce during a 
Special Olympics event in Otsego in July. Sylvia Dutcher, 3, answered a question posed by actor and storyteller
 Zaraawar Mistry during a program at the Elk River Library in September. Zimmerman Thunder football players made quite an entrance at their homecoming game in September, and they left quite an impression on Milaca in a 49-0 win.
