Elk River Police Department investigates theft of packages in Trout Brook

The Elk River Police Department is investigating several recent reports of packages stolen from the doorways of homes in the Trout Brook development.

Packages had been delivered by various delivery services and left near the front door when nobody was home to receive them. On one occasion a resident deterred a possible theft after she confronted a juvenile male she’d seen come onto her porch after a package had been delivered. The juvenile fled and was seen getting into a compact, maroon SUV occupied by another juvenile male. The Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance; if you see someone remove a delivered package from a neighbor’s doorstep, immediately call 911.

The Elk River Police Department also offers these tips to deter thieves who may be targeting holiday packages:

•Several delivery services allow the customer to track their orders and provide an estimated arrival date. When possible, arrange for someone to be home to receive the package. If you can’t be at home, arrange for a trusted neighbor to watch for the package.

•If your employer allows, arrange to have the package sent to your place of employment.

•Many online retailers are now implementing an option to order online and then pick up in-store.  Whereas this might not be a convenient as having it delivered to your door, it is worth considering, avoiding the risk of having packages stolen.
