City earns 26th straight GFOA finance award

Elk River’s Finance Department has received a certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting for the 26th consecutive year.

The award was announced at the Nov. 2 City Council meeting.

Presented by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, the award cited Elk River’s “comprehensive annual financial report.” The association is a nonprofit association serving 17,500 government finance professionals.

According to a press release from the association, “attainment (of the award) represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.”

“This is the highest form of recognition,” said Tim Simon, Elk River’s finance director. “We’ve had an awesome staff for a number of years, the whole department all the way up to the City Council.”

Mayor John Dietz said receipt of the national award for fiscal year 2014 shows that Elk River’s finance department “goes above and beyond.”

“This is a great honor,” Dietz said. “I’m proud to be part of this.”  — Sue Webber
