The Zimmerman Thunder made two goal-line stands, each followed by a long touchdown drive, as they scuttled the Fridley Tigers 30-7 in their opener at home Thursday evening.

The Thunder gave up an opening touchdown but no more, and scored in each quarter and rushed for 422 yards, led by Austin May with 130 and quarterback Matt Dorso with 120.

Fridley had first-and-goal on two occasions but the Thunder stopped them on the five-yard line and drive 95 yards, and at the one-yard line and drove 99 yards.

“We had about 400 yards and only threw the ball four times,” said coach Tom Kish. “We were getting four to 10 yards on almost every carry. Austin was our workhorse, and Matt Dorso ran the offense very efficiently, making good decisions on the options.”

The Thunder trailed 7-0 after Tyree Carruthers hit Jonathan Arzola for an 8-yard TD in the first quarter.

“Fridley has some team speed, and we were missing a lot of tackles on that drive,” said Kish.

The Thunder, who lost to Fridley in last year’s opener 19-7, stormed back with touchdown runs of six yards by Trent Milless, 26 by May, and 15 and five by Dorso. The Thunder were 3-for-4 on two-point conversions.

The Thunder will play at Granite Ridge Conference favorite Becker next Friday.
