The late Tony Belanger has been honored as Elk River’s Volunteer of the Month for August.

For 30 years, Belanger was commander of the Elk River Color Guard, which includes the Legion and VFW.

He conducted numerous funerals in the Elk River area, with 65 documented from 2012 to present.

He ran flag retirement ceremonies for more than 30 years.

He participated in the Color Guard for high school football games in Elk River and Rogers, including homecoming parades. He also participated in numerous parades in surrounding areas and in Veterans Day celebrations at schools.

On Memorial Day, he led the Color Guard to numerous cemeteries in the area for the last 20 years, conducting rifle salutes and reading the veterans’ names.

He worked almost every Friday meal at the Legion with his wife and helped with many fundraisers for the Legion Post.

He also was very active in his church as the morning greeter.

Belanger’s wife, Norma, accepted the award from Mayor John Dietz at the Aug. 18 City Council meeting.
