Elk River hires Surratt as deputy fire chief

Aaron Surratt has been hired as deputy chief of operations for the Elk River Fire Department.

The position is a new one. The fire department’s 2013-2017 strategic plan included the creation of the position to oversee the department’s firefighting force, according to Fire Chief T. John Cunningham.

The Elk River City Council approved hiring Surratt, effective Sept. 2.

Surratt, of Zimmerman, currently is an assistant chief with the West Metro Fire Rescue District, which has stations in New Hope and Crystal.

There were 19 applicants.
