Elk River Police are investigating the death of James Belland, a 25-year-old Elk River man they believe died of a drug overdose.

Police were called by the victim’s wife on a report of a possible overdose at 9:08 p.m. on Aug. 15 in the 19000 Queen Circle, according to Elk River Police Capt. Robert Kluntz said.

Officers arrived and were directed to a downstairs bathroom, which was locked, Kluntz said. After unsuccessfully attempting to contact Belland and trying to unlock the door, officers kicked the door in and located him lying facedown on the floor. He was pronounced dead on arrival and no resuscitation efforts were used, Kluntz said.

Witnesses at the scene indicated that the problem may be related to an overdose, but this has not been confirmed by the medical examiner’s office, Kluntz said.

Police are continuing to investigate the matter. If the death was indeed a drug overdose as suspected, Kluntz said, police could try to identify and charge whoever provided illicit drugs to Belland.
