Baseball: First-place Saints thump Pioneers 12-1

The Elk River Pioneers were humbled by first-place St. Michael 12-1 there Wednesday evening.

Jared Dehmer struck out 13 Pioneers in the seven-inning rout by the leaders of the North Star League North Division. Blake Schirmers went 4-for-4 with two RBI’s and Alex Naasz 2-for-4 with four RBI’s.

The Saints scored six runs each off Porter Morrell and Zach Pechtell.

The bright spot for the Pioneers was Josh Juntunen, back after missing several games with illness, throwing 3 2/3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. At the plate, Erik Nyquist was 3-for-3.

The Pioneers (7-9) will close the regular season with games Saturday and Sunday in Grand Rapids.
