Baseball: Coon Rapids tops Pioneers 7-3

One bad inning sunk the Elk River Pioneers in a 7-3 loss to Coon Rapids on Friday evening in Coon Rapids.

Each team had 13 hits but the Pioneers (3-3) left 12 runners on base and Coon Rapids stranded only four.

Coon Rapids broke a 3-3 tie with four in the last of the fourth on five hits off Jordan Hollom. The Pioneers would have been out of it with no runs but two throwing errors on the same play kept the inning going for Coon Rapids, scoring one run. After that, Pat O’Donnell, Sam Christopherson and Adam Wedwick each added an RBI single.

Hollom otherwise pitched well in a five-inning relief stint, striking out five. Tucker Morrell pitched the first two innings, allowing three runs.

Morrell went 3-for-3 with an RBI, Zach Pechtell hit a solo home run, and Sam Krick was 2-for-4 with a double and triple.

The Pioneers will play at Monticello next Wednesday.
