Matt Kiersted, Elk River sophomore defenseman, verbally committed recently to North Dakota, one of the nation’s top hockey programs.
“I went up there (Grand Forks) a lot when I was younger,” said Kiersted. “We’d go to Canada for tournaments and stop at UND and watch games. Ever since then, I’ve liked UND and they’ve got a really nice rink.”
Kiersted, an Elk starter since ninth grade and all-conference as a sophomore, said he plans to play one more year with the Elks and probably leave for juniors in the USHL his senior year.
He’s already shown he’s a defender who can generate offense, too, with six goals and 19 assists this past season.
