A Sauk Rapids man was arrested early Tuesday morning in Big Lake Township following a pursuit with deputies and two additional police agencies.
A deputy sheriff attempted a traffic stop with the driver of an alleged stolen van at about 5:20 a.m. in Zimmerman. The driver refused to stop, however, and led police on a pursuit in which speeds reached 90 m.p.h., according to Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott.
A PIT maneuver by a deputy brought the pursuit to a safe conclusion near the intersection of County Road 14 and Highway 10 in Big Lake Township, Brott said. Barton Roberts, 48, was arrested and was held for charges including fleeing police in a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of stolen property.
Officers from Big Lake and Elk River assisted in the arrest and no injuries occurred.
(Editor’s note: The PIT maneuver, or precision immobilization technique, is a pursuit tactic by which a pursuing car can force a fleeing car to abruptly turn sideways, causing the driver to lose control and stop.)
