Morgan Bleyhl and Alexa Filipiak, the only District 728 athletes in the state golf tournament, each had a shaky start in the opening rounds Tuesday, with Bleyhl shooting 86 and Filipiak 95 at Bunker Hills.
The Elk River sophomores are in 41st and 69th place, respectively, among 88 entrants, heading into Wednesday’s final 18 holes.
“They both got off to a bad start and couldn’t recover, but they are having a good time,” said coach Dave Bleyhl. “We had some ice cream on the way home and it was all forgotten.”
Bleyhl shot 42-44 and Filipiak 49-46. It’s Bleyhl’s second state tournament, as she also played in eighth grade when the Elk team made it, and Filipiak’s first.
“They were feeling some pressure, and it’s a tough course for young players,” said the coach.
It helps if you’re a senior and have played a few state tournaments — like Wayzata’s Sarah Burnham and New Prague’s Kenzie Neisen, who both shot 67 on Tuesday. They are the same pair that tied for first last year.
There are no local golfers in the state boys tournament this year.
