Art work by recent immigrants that reflect dramatic and often horrific experiences they have survived is the subject of the current Elk River Area Arts Alliance exhibit.
“Free at Last: Journey of Hope” began May 31 and will continue through June 14. The Alliance gallery at 609 Main Street is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Paramount Education Outreach and Visual Art Center of St. Cloud collaborated with Hands Across the World, an agency serving needs of refugees new to the area. Paramount has loaned the exhibit to the ERAAA.
Five artists provided workshops of four to six weeks to help these new residents develop language, social and work skills while having the opportunity for artistic expression. The worked in the media of appliqué, fabric construction, weaving, ceramics, painting and drawing.
Also on display are photographs and a series of stories gathered from the recent immigrants.
