Molli Detloff of Elk River placed third in the discus at the state track meet on Friday, while three Elk boys entrants advanced through preliminaries to the finals.
Detloff’s best throw was 132-7, which trailed Prior Lake’s Kasie Vollmer (152-10) and Eastview’s Natalie Manders 141-10). Detloff’s section first-place throw was 137-9 and her school record is 142-56.
This was Detloff’s fourth year at state in discus and the first time since ninth grade that she has medaled. She placed third that year with 132-0.
Detloff will compete in shot put Saturday. That event begins 9 a.m. This is Detloff’s first year qualifying for state in shot.
Elk senior Morris Dennis advanced to finals in the 400 dash with 48.78, the fourth-best prelim time. He beat his personal best of 48.90. Wayzata’s Michael Smith led with 48.32; he also had the best section time, 47.40. The finals will be held 11:27 a.m. Saturday.
Elk sophomore Lucas Trapp advanced to finals in the 800 run with 1:54.93, the fourth-best prelim time. (His personal best is 1:54.69). The leader was Eden Prairie’s Cal Lawton with 1:54.23; he also had the best second time, 1:52.52. The finals will be held 12:06 p.m. Saturday.
The Elks 4×400 team advanced with a 3:21.35 time, third-best in the prelims and well under their previous best of 3:24.48. The quartet includes senior Matthew Olson, Trapp, senior Nathan Wallestad and Dennis. Wayzata led with 3:20.27 and also had he best section time lot 3:19.65. The finals will be held 12:52 p.m. Saturday.
Also Saturday, Rachel Ness will run in the girls 1600 and 10:47 a.m. and Trapp will run in the boys 1600 at 10:55 a.m. The 1600 does not have prelims.
Zimmerman senior Jordan Griffin did not make the finals with his 40-1 1/4 effort. He had qualified with 42-8 1/4.
