Tennis: Elks singles, doubles entrants both reach state semifinals

Both of Elk River’s entrants in the state singles and doubles tennis tournaments advanced to the semifinals with two victories on Thursday.

Elk junior Josh Gearou defeated East Ridge freshman Benjamin Van der Sman 6-1, 6-0, and Rochester Mayo eighth-grader Sebastian Vile 6-1, 6-2, at the University of Minnesota.

Elk senior Nathan Chanthamontry and junior Sam Gearou beat Rochester Century’s Sahil Chhugani and Nicholas Any 6-2, 6-1, and Hopkins’ Andrew Rust and Chase Johnson 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Gearou will face Wayzata sophomore Nick Beaty in the semifinals at 8 a.m. Friday. Beaty edged Gearou in the team semifinals Wednesday when Wayzata beat the Elks 6-1 on the way to the championship.

The other semifinal pits Forest Lake’s Toby Boyer against Hopkins’ Manfred Barrios. The championship match will be played at 11 a.m.

Chanthamontry-Gearou will face Maple Grove’s Charlie Adkins and Rory Calabria in the semifinals Friday at 8 a.m. The other semifinal has teams from Eden Prairie and St. Cloud Tech. The finals will be held at 11:30 a.m.
