Letter to the editor: Elk River Memorial Day crowd appreciated

Thank you to all in attendance at the Memorial Day Program at Elk River Lions Park on May 26, 2014.

The music and songs were inspirational; the scheduled speakers did a great job. The weather was great. The Boy Scouts posted the colors on the stage as well as flags representing all branches of the armed services. The Scouts also led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, they did an excellent job, thank you very much.

Curt Swanson of VFW Post 5518 was the master of the ceremony, and Robert Koehler of American Legion Post 112 was the scheduled speaker; both stressed what Memorial Day really means.

The combined Honor Guard of VFW Post 5518 and American Legion Post 112 began their day at 6 a.m. visiting local cemeteries to provide a rifle salute as well as reading the names of all veterans buried in the cemetery.

The Legion provided breakfast at 7 a.m. for the Honor Guard; after breakfast they resumed the cemetery visits prior to arriving at Lions Park at 10 a.m. The Guard provided a rifle salute at the flag pole at Lions Park, closing the program.

The Elk River German Band provided some great music and dancing at the Post after the Memorial Day Program. Thank you to these great musicians. I hope everyone had a great day and time. Thank you to everyone who helped plan, set up and clean up to put on this program. A big thank you to all cooking breakfast and brats and serving refreshments at the Post. Thank you to Gloria Maher for her help and inspiration.—Tom Kulkay, Commander, Elk River Post 112 American Legion
