Golf: Rogers 10th in strong Albert Lea Inv. field

Competing in a strong field, the Rogers golfers placed 10th of 16 in the Albert Lea Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Five of 2013 state tournament teams (Rogers among them) were on hand, including the the teams that placed 1-2-3.

“The boys are close to putting it together,” said Rogers coach Dan Bursheim, “and this was a great weekend experience. We played well and we knew that we left a few easy shots out there.”

Cruz Martinez led the Royals with a pair of 78’s for a 156 total. Martinez has dropped his average by nine strokes from last year, when he played at No. 6.

Bursheim praised Cruz for a strong metal approach. He doesn’t force shots he can’t hit, and accepts missed shots and moves on, the coach said.

Luke Bunkers and Dylan Kline each had a 158 total.

“They are both real close to having an outstanding run of golf,” said Bursheim about Bunkers and Kline.

Taylor Fisher shot 174, struggling off the first tee for a 90 on Friday but coming back with more discipline for an 84 on Saturday.

Wayzata won with 595 and had the medalist, Grant Rahaja with 142. Lakeville South had 605 and Lakeville North 609.

The Royals have their full Mississippi 8 Conference meet on Thursday at Links at Northfork and their final M-8 West meet on Friday.
