Softball: Royal girls clinch first Miss. 8 title with 11-0 win over Princeton

The Rogers Royals wrapped up their first Mississippi 8 softball title, rolling past the Princeton Tigers 11-0 at home on Friday evening.

The Royals are 12-0 in conference and 16-1 overall. They’ll try finish conference unbeaten with a game at St. Francis on Saturday.

Seeded second in Section 5AAA behind the state’s top-ranked team, Maple Grove, they will start playoffs Tuesday at home, 4:15 p.m., against Champlin Park or Totino-Grace.

Melea Bruns hurled a five-inning one-hitter with one walk and six strikeouts and the Royals made no errors.

Savannah Weiter belted a two-run homer to center field during a four-run second inning. Also knocking in two runs each were Maddie Anderson (3-for-3), Kaitlyn Lloyd (2-for-3, two runs), Maddie Thiebault (2-for-3, two runs), and Kaetlyn Kemmetmueller (1-for-3). Elli Anderson was 2-for-2 with two steals.

Mel Hensley took the loss.
