Michaela Bruns homered for the second straight game and went 4-for-4 as the Elk River Elks closed the regular season with an 8-1 win over Coon Rapids on Friday evening.
The game was played at Youth Athletic Complex with a 6 p.m. start rather than the usual 4:15 p.m., in order to hold Youth Softball Night and give more parents a chance to watch a game.
Bruns had three RBI including the solo homer as she led a 14-hit attack. The senior catcher has two homers for the year and 10 in her career. Her other round-tripper came Thursday in a 3-1 loss to Maple Grove.
Marie Deaton was 3-for-4 and scored three runs in the leadoff slot. Courtney Jensen was 2-for-3 (RBI), Jessica Neuman 2-for-4 (double, two runs), Emma Pieper 2-for-3 (two RBI), and Ali Krohn 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
Anna Pipenhagen struck out 14 batters for the second straight game, throwing a five-hitter with no walks. When the first two batters got aboard on errors in the fifth, she struck out three straight batters. Cassie Brown singled home Coon Rapids’ run in the sixth.
The Elks officially finished 7-3 for third place in the NWSC. Only the first round of games counted in the standings. Maple Grove was 9-1, Anoka 8-2, the Elks 7-3 and Osseo 6-4.
The Elks (14-4 overall) are likely to be seeded in the top four among 12 teams in Section 7AAA, in which case they would get a first-round bye and start playoffs Saturday, May 24, in Andover. However, if seeded fifth or sixth, they’d have a home game Tuesday.
