The Sherburne County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit added some hardware recently.
Deputies and their partners attended the 2014 United States Police Canine Association National Detector Trials held May 4-7 at the Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport and in Edina.
Seventy narcotic detection K-9 teams and 24 explosive detection K-9 teams from all over the country attended.
From Sherburne County, Correctional Officer Eric Fahland and his K-9 partner, Meeko, and Deputy Ryan Sturm and his K-9 partner, Ecco, became nationally certified in narcotics detection. In addition, they received a fifth-place trophy for room searches and an 11th-place trophy for overall narcotics detection.
Sturm with Ecco partnered up with Officer Matt Maier with the Baxter Police Department and received a first-place regional team trophy.
Also, Sgt. Adam Boler and his K-9 partner, Phoenix, became nationally certified in explosives detection. In addition, they received a third-place trophy for room searches, a fifth-place trophy for vehicle searches, and a fifth-lace trophy for overall explosives detection. They also partnered up with Sgt. Todd Husby with the MSP Airport and received a first-place regional team trophy.
