Garrett Christianson has announced he will run for the Elk River City Council seat in Ward 1.
Council Member Stewart Wilson currently holds that seat. Wilson said last month that, at that point, he wasn’t planning to seek election.
Christianson said he has an interest in city government and when he learned the council seat in his ward was up for election, decided to run.
“I was raised to understand that it’s important to know what’s going on and to be informed,” he said.
He said he has attended some Elk River City Council meetings. Among the issues he has been following are Pinewood Golf Course and an increase in drug use, specifically heroin.
Christianson is a native of Andover. His wife is a 2002 graduate of Elk River High School. They have three children ages 6, 2 and 1.
Christianson works at the UPS Maple Grove package facility as a driver manager.
Council seats in both Ward 1 and Ward 4 as well as the mayor’s position are up for election this fall. Ward 4 Council Member Paul Motin and Mayor John Dietz have both said they will seek re-election.
Candidates interested in running have to file for office at Elk River City Hall between May 20 and June 3.
