Softball: Royals atop Miss. 8 alone after sweeping Bison 5-0 and 3-2

The Rogers Royals took command of the Mississippi 8 race by sweeping the Buffalo Bison 5-0 and 3-2 on Wednesday.

Both teams were unbeaten in conference heading into the twin bill at Buffalo. Rogers is now 9-0 in conference with three games left, and 12-1 overall, losing only to No. 3 ranked Lakeville North.

The Royals will play Friday evening at Zimmerman, starting 6 p.m.

Royals 5, Buffalo 0

Royal sophomore Katelyn Kemmetmueller dominated with a three-hitter, one walk and 12 strikeouts, while going 2-for-3 with two runs. Emily Hanford was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer. Katilyn Lloyd was 2-for-4. Lloyd and Melea Bruns had RBI’s. Maddy DeMariais took the loss, allowing 11 hits. The Royals won comfortably despite leaving 12 runners on base.

Royals 3, Buffalo 2

Royal freshman Melea Bruns took a shutout into the seventh inning — giving the Royals 13 straight scoreless innings — before the Bison got a two-run double from Emily Hansen in the top of the seventh. Bruns gave up eight hits but no walks and struck out four. Elli Anderson was 3-for-3 and scored a run. Hanford had a single and two RBI, and Lloyd had a single and one RBI. Payton Speedell pitched for the Bison, allowing eight hits.
