The 38th annual Elk River Invitational was by far the smallest and quickest ever.
It was barely past lunch when golfers from six schools concluded 18 rounds with Andover capturing the championship and Elk River placing third.
“We had 24 teams and it was snowed out, then 17 teams and it was rained out,” said Elk coach Dave Bleyhl about the twice-postponed event. “I couldn’t get many teams to come today. Most of them said they had conference makeup meets.”
Andover scored 357, Forest Lake 358, Elk River 364, Stillwater 367, Benilde-St. Margaret’s 383, Elk River “B” 432, and Anoka 507.
“It felt like a conference meet,” said Bleyhl.
McKensie Swenson of BSM was low with 81, followed by two Andover players, Haley Tollette and Sierra Langlie with 83. Langlie was the medalist last year.
Samantha Lindeen of the Elks was fourth with 84. Other counting scores were Morgan Bleyhl with 92, Morgan Dietrich with 93 and Grace O’Konek with 95.
Lindeen, a junior, and Bleyhl, a sophomore, are third-year varsity veterans. It’s otherwise a young squad. The Elks are 3-3 in conference so far.
“We’re getting better. We need work on our short games. Our chipping and putting have not been good,” said the coach.
Next for the Elks is the Coon Rapids Invitational on Thursday
