Softball: Homer helps Elks edge Hopkins 8-6

Emma Pieper blasted a two-run homer to help the Elk River Elks bounce back from their first loss with a hard-fought 8-6 win over the Hopkins Royals on Monday in Hopkins.

The homer was the first extra-base hit of the season Pieper, one of only two new starters for the defending state champion Elks. The sophomore outfielder is hitting .367 with six RBI.

Anna Pipenhagen labored six innings for the win, giving up four runs on a two-run homer, two doubles, a single and four walks. Pipenhagen (8-1) has a broken pinkie on her throwing hand.

Olivia Wolters pitched the seventh, giving up two hits, two walks and two runs, but the Elks held on.

Courney Jensen was 1-for-5 and knocked in two runs. Pipenhagen was 2-for-2 plus two walks and Jess Neuman 2-for-3 (two runs, double).

The Elks, who lost to Osseo 7-3 on Saturday, are 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the NWSC. They will resume conference play on Tuesday at Blaine.
