The Rogers golfers’ six-year winning streak in Mississippi 8 meets ended Monday when the Buffalo Bison outshot the Royals by 20 strokes at Monticello Country Club.
Rogers had opened the season April 16 with their 38th straight conference win, at Becker, beating Buffalo by eight strokes.
The Bison got it done Tuesday, though, led by the top three golfers in the meet. Jake Ramsey was medalist with 76, followed by Hunter Bruhn with 77 and Gunnar Goodmanson 80.
“The streak is over,” said Rogers coach Dan Bursheim. “It was great to see it continue throughout the years as the lineup changed and the boys grew into young men. (This) should have happened a number of times over the years. The boys played the best they could, but Buffalo had a solid round by a veteran team.”
In the five-team meet, Buffalo shot 315, Rogers 335, St. Michael-Albertville 342, Monticello 345, and Big Lake 364.
“I knew their streak was a long one, but 38 straight wins, holy moly! How tough is that?” marveled Charlie Keifenheim, Buffalo coach.
“It has been fun to watch the Rogers golf program over the years. Coach Bursheim has led an incredibly talented group, year after year. Buffalo had some pretty good teams but we never had a sniff of a conference win with them in the mix. It is nice to at least be in contention right now. We will have to see what the year brings, but I know that Rogers still has some great players and it is not over yet.”Rogers counting scores were Dylan Kline and Luke Bunkers at 81 (tied for fourth), Nick Anderson 85, and Cruz Martinez 88.
Next is a conference meet Tuesday at Wild Marsh in Buffalo.
