Baseball: Ellis sparks Royals win over Cooper 7-3

The Rogers Royals broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the sixth inning and defeated Robbinsdale Cooper 7-3 in their home opener Friday.

Luke Ellis pitched the last two innings to get the win, giving up three hits but striking out four and allowing no runs. Ellis was also 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.

The four-run burst included two singles, two walks and two errors. The go-ahead run scored on Scott Neubauer’s sac fly. Two runners hustled home on a ground-out by Bryanlee Santiago-Martinez and an error.

Luke Selken pitched the first 4 2/3 innings for Rogers (1-1), giving up six hits and two walks, striking out four. He gave up three runs, with Adam Olejar notching the third out of the fifth inning.

Mike Terres was 2-for-4 (RBI, steal), Adam Nauth 2-for-3 (double, two runs), Shane Smith 1-for-2 (two runs), Pete Fehr 1-for-1 (walk, hit-by-pitch), and Celeb Reese 1-for-3 (walk).

Rogers will open conference Tuesday at Buffalo.
