The Zimmerman softball team, coming off a 16-6 season last spring, had a humbling opener Thursday, losing to the Becker Bulldogs 10-0 at Becker.
Becky Harmon held the Thunder to two hits and struck out eight.
Zimmerman starter Ashley Pool gave up four runs in two innings, and McKenna Butau gave up runs in three innings.
“Becker hits the ball extremely well,” said Emily Zahn, Thunder coach.
Carlie Lage broke up a perfect game by Becker in the fourth inning with a walk and Gabby Antolak followed with a single to left.
Kayla Peterson (freshman 1B) had a nice day at the plate, said the coach, by forcing the pitcher to throw several pitches in both at-bats, and then hitting a single to right field in her second at bat.
“It was a disappointing loss,” said Zahn. “Our youth and nerves were very apparent. I expect the girls to bounce back and play much more aggressively in our games next week.”
Zimmerman will play at St. Cloud Cathedral on Monday.
