Clay Elrod of Elk River was one of the scoring leaders and dunk champions in the state boys basketball all-star series last weekend.

Playing for the Blue team, which won both games, the 6-foot-6 forward scored 20 points at St. Cloud State on Friday evening, and 18 points at Macalester College on Saturday. Both were high-scoring games; Blue had 144 the first night.

“I just did what I usually do,” said the Bemidji State recruit, known for his snaky drives and high-arching 3-pointers.

His winning dunk on Saturday went like this:

“I was at the free throw line, back to the basket, and I threw the ball between my lefts, and it bounced off the backboard, and I went up and dunked it.”

He also did a 360-degree dunk and another where holding the ball between his legs before bringing it up. Each contestant had two attempts each day. Jake Johnson of St. Francis won the dunk title Friday evening.

Forty seniors were chosen by the coaches association to play in the series. Not among them were the state’s superstars, Duke recruit Tyus Jones of Apple Valley and Stanford recruit Reid Travis of DeLaSalle, who were playing in the McDonald’s national all-star games.
