Zimmerman enjoyed its first winning season in girls basketball since 2006 this year, but unfortunately the season ended in the first game of playoffs Tuesday.

The Thunder, seeded No. 4 in Section 5AAA, lost to No. 5 Becker 64-54 at home, hurt by the absence of one of their senior guards.

The Thunder finished 16-10.

The two teams had split in conference play, but Becker was in charge in the rubber game. Zimmerman was within 15-13 before they went cold and the Bulldogs closed the half with a 17-4 run for a 34-20 lead.

Senior guard Lexi Funaro scored a game-high 25 points but nobody else had more than six. Kaitlyn Mason, who’s had a fine year, had to sit much of the game due to a head injury, and scored four points.

“She fell and hit her head really hard with about seven minutes to play in the first half,” said coach Lance Dalbey. ” She did come back at about the 10 minute mark in the second half, but wasn’t really into it. We really missed a second scorer.”

Allison Cieslak tallied 22 points and Mauren Thiesen 16 for the Bulldogs, who beat the Thunder with hard drives to the pop and stout defense.
