Elk River’s two state tournament wrestlers, Garrett Caldon and A.J. Hannan, each won their first round matches Friday, with Caldon still in Class AAA medal contention at the end of the day and Hannan done.
Caldon (24-8), 113-pound junior, pulled off an upset in the first round, throwing Tanner Cole (39-2) of Owatonna in the final seconds for a takedown and a 4-3 win.
Caldon was then pinned by eighth-grade prodigy, No. 1 ranked Brian Maas (41-0) of Bemidji in 4:57. The Elk section runner-up stayed alive in wrestle backs with a 10-0 win over Adam Kunz (29-11) of Rocori. Caldon faces No. 4 Jake Bergland (40-4) of Rosemount next.
Hannon (23-5), 182-pound senior, beat a fellow District 728 student, Tyler Eicher (31-7) of Rogers, 12-2 in the first round. Hannan lost to No. 7 Joe Hoeve (36-6) of Farmington 19-6 in the quarterfinals, and to Luke Dodd (32-12) of Eastview 6-3 in the wrestle backs.
