Nordic Ski: Martin is section runner-up; four Elks gain state

Joey Martin was section runner-up in Nordic Ski on Thursday and will be joined by three Elk River-Rogers-Zimmerman teammates at the state meet.

Martin and Breck Hickman, who placed eighth in Section 4 at Theodore Wirth Park, each qualified for the second time. Martin was fifth and Hickman 10th at the sectional last year. Both are Elk River seniors.

In the girls race, Rogers senior Brittney Dorn placed 10th and Elk River junior Reece Hickman placed 13th. They’re also set for the state meet next Thursday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

The Elk River boys placed third behind Wayzata and Maple Grove. Rogers placed ninth among 12 teams.

The Elk River girls placed fourth and Rogers ninth, with Wayzata, Eden Prairie and Maple Grove finishing 1-2-3.

Elk River, Rogers and Zimmerman are one team during the regular season but compete separately in post-season.

Martin took second with a time of 31:58. Far in front was Mound-Westonka senior Scott Harrison in 30:42, six seconds ahead of M-W’s Kole Retterat.  Martin had the third-best skate time of 16:19 and second-best classic time of 15:39.

Breck Hickman’s time was 33:42. Dorn finished in 39:51 and Reece Hickman in 40:51.

The Elk boys also had junior Dan Janasz in 19th place, sophomore Aaron Ley 39th, sophomore Colin Webster 44th, junior Matt Vrchota 53rd, and senior Ben Vrchota 55th.

Rogers had junior Karl Gorecki in 30th place, junior Ben Sylvester 54th, junior Jacob Nardina 56th, sophomore Jake Dotterer 69th and sophomore Ben Fife 73rd, among 73 finishers.

Elk River girls also had senior Mallory Adams in 19th place, junior Maggie Hohlen in 24th, junior Tori Morgan in 27th, junior Ali Manthey 28th, junior Shannon White 29th, and junior Emma Crane 32nd.

Rogers also had sophomore Katelyn Kemmitmueller 60th, senior Madison Anderson 68th and freshman Alyssa Dallman 71st, along 73 finishers.

Ally Sterneman, the lone Zimmerman entrant, a senior, placed 52nd.
