Gymnastics: Elk win streak snapped at 49 by Blaine/Andover; they still tie for title

The streak of 49 straight dual meet victories by Elk River-Rogers-Zimmerman gymnasts came to an end Thursday evening.

“They were solid tonight. They were ‘on’ and we were not,” said ERZ coach  Jackie Deiley about the opponent after Blaine/Andover handed the Elks their first dual meet loss in six years, 137.575 to 135.325, at ERHS.

Despite the loss, ERZ tied Champlin Park for the championship, each finishing 7-1. The Elks, claiming their sixth consecutive crown, beat the Rebels 135.2 to 132.2 in the season opener.

Blaine/Armstrong, whose previous high score was 134.9, lost to Maple Grove and Champlin Park in conference and finished third.

The Elks, who have scored between 134.7 and 137.5 this year, had some stumbles, especially on beam with five falls.

The team accepted the rare setback in stride.

“This is really not a huge deal,” said Deiley. “We will be back here tomorrow working hard for sectionals.”

Sarah Miller led the B/A victory, winning all-around with 36.625 along with vault, beam and floor. Kellie Pruit was third with 34.300.

ERZ’s Katie Fleck scored 34.875 for second place and Krista Kovar 34.025 for fourth. Kovar aggravated a nagging ankle injury with an awkward dismount on beam, scoring 7.95.

The program’s last defeat was in December 2008 against Centennial.

The team will compete separately in sectionals — Rogers in 5AA at Irondale on Feb. 13, Elk River in 8AA at Moorhead on Feb. 15, and Zimmerman in 7A at Princeton on Feb. 15.
