Elk River real estate agent and Zimmerman business owner Beth Merwin was officially sworn onto the Zimmerman City Council Monday.

Merwin took over the vacancy left by former City Council Member Greg Laney who resigned suddenly in December over work-related reasons.   Early in January, the council decided to offer Merwin the position because she had received the second highest number of votes after Laney in the 2012 election.

Merwin’s first official responsibility as a council member was to take down notes for Zimmerman’s Park Board report, delivered by new Park Board Chair Tim Sevcik, who shared an update with the council on the City Park’s new disc golf course opening this year.

The council also heard updates on the proposed Sewer and Water budget by Public Works Director Dave Horvath, who went into detail about the numbers he presented, including future projects such as repainting fire hydrants this summer.

As the council came to a close for the evening, Merwin said she’s excited and honored to be taking part in her local government.
