Swimming: Elks win Cambridge-Isanti meet

The Elk River swimmers were champions of the Cambridge-Isanti Invitational on Saturday, winning three events and scoring consistently in all 12 events.

“We had a great team effort and some awesome swims from our young team members,” assessed coach Denise Green. “We had only one swim that didn’t place in the top 16, and we had some good times posted.”

First place finishes came from Nick Kopp in the individual medley and Jake Kohorst in the 100 backstroke, both with season-best times, and the 200 freestyle relay.

Owen Musgjerd took second in the 200 free with his best time, the other three in that event posted best times as well. Hunter Bechtel and Brandon DeValk placed 4-5 in the 200 IM, both best times.

Spencer Hlavachek was second in both the 50 and 100 free. Andy Bronshteyn was second in diving with his best score. Chris Thorndal posted best times in the 50 and 100 free, placing 6th and 5th,  respectively.

“One of the surprises was Zack Kopp, seventh-grader, in the 500, where he cut 20 seconds and placed second,” said Green, adding that Michael Young cut 10 seconds and placed sixth.

The four back strokers all cut time and placed 1-2-6-10. Coleman Maegi placed fourth in the breaststroke and 11th in the 100 freestyle with best times.

The Elks are scheduled to host Armstrong on Tuesday in a makeup for the cold weather closing last Thursday.  The Elks would then face Andove in the third-fourth place dual on Thursday at home.
