First-place Elk River-Zimmerman scored three times in the first period and cruised 5-0 over last-place Coon Rapids at home Saturday evening.
Jake Jaremko got the first goal, shorthanded, as he lost control of the puck, spun 360 degrees and pounced on it again, and drilled it into an empty net as the goalie had fallen down.
Chase Springman and Isaac Schwab added to the lead in the first period, and Kyle Badger and Peter Jones scored in the final two periods.
Notching assists were Matt Kierstad (two), Springman, Jaremko, Dylan Bouten, Colton Budreau, Bouten and Joe Gonrowski.
The Elks outshot the Cardinals 37-10. Mac Berglove made seven saves and Chase Gauthier had three.
The Elks were playing their first game after Andrew Zerban, one of their top three scorers with 12 goals, left the team to join the Fargo Force of the USHL.
The Elks improved to 9-0 in conference and 13-3 overall with eighth consecutive wins. The Cardinals dropped to 0-8 and 2-14.
The Elks will host Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Tuesday.
