Zimmerman High School’s one-act play “Of Winners, Losers, and Games” was presented Tuesday evening as a free performance for the public and as a tune-up for sub-section competition coming up Saturday.
Written by O.B. Rozell, this was a kind of morality play set “somewhere in the cosmos” with most of the characters named for concepts, starting with Winner (Carly Nelson), her husband Loser (Vince Snyder), and their children Peace and Patience (Alexis Larson and Aiden Estridge), Compassion (Heather Nagengast) and Love (Deanna Schultz). Also stirring things up are Hate and Anger (Andrea Ruether and Philene Bernies), Greed (Cassy Boucher) and War (Trista Miller).
These actors projected their concepts with distinct costumes, attitudes and some good quips, leaving the audience intrigued and curious where it was going.
A young couple, Bob and Susan (Parker Sturlaugson and Marissa Luing), are hauled into this strange realm by cosmic judges Miss Redd (Alexa Muylaert) and Miss White (Keely DeYonge). After getting acquainted, uncomfortably, with all the concepts, Bob and Sue are sent by Winner back to their life, where they are in anguish over their deceased baby. Keeping score are Miss White, representing goodness, hoping the young couple will succeed, and Miss Redd (evil), hoping they will fail — bearing in mind Rozell’s theme that in every episode of life you either win or lose.
Zimmerman’s sub-section will be held Saturday at Duluth East High School.
