Joan Ruprecht was enjoying an artists’ excursion to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan last summer when she snapped a photo of her group’s host and teacher, Harvey Schroeder, as he relaxed and chatted with them while wearing a straw hat.
Ruprecht, of Elk River, decided to use that photo as the basis for one of her oil paintings at Schroeder Studio this fall. “The Artist” wound up getting Best in Show at the Arts Alliance’s third annual Oil Painting Show that’s currently on display at the gallery at 609 Main Street.
Ruprecht, a realtor, was originally a student of Schroeder’s during junior high school, and currently in his weekly painting studio. Schroeder’s reaction was, “I think the subject matter is glorious, but even more, the painting is extraordinarily well-painted.”
Also recognized were Linda Croteau (award of excellence) for a farm scene called “Don’t Look Back,” Roxanne Current (merit award) for a landscape called “Summer Sky over Kelley Farm,” and Mary Olson (artists’ choice, a vote of the participants) for a landscape, “After the Storm.”
Judging the show was Bonnie Roberts, a portrait artist from Battle Lake who is well-known by the Schroeder artists and was in town to conduct a workshop.
