Micro preemies Dylan and Hayden Moan have hit a big milestone — their first birthday.
The identical twin girls were born Jan. 11, 2013, to Kristin and Eric Moan of Elk River. Each weighed less than 2 pounds at birth.
“You two are true miracles by every definition,” Kristin wrote on her family’s CaringBridge site the day of their birthday.
Dylan, who weighed 1 pound, 3 ounces at birth, now tips the scales at 14 pounds, 13 ounces. Hayden was 1 pound, 7 ounces at birth and now weighs 17 pounds, 4 ounces.
The girls celebrated their birthday Jan. 18 with an open house at Broadway Pizza in Elk River.
They had been born four months early after their mother developed complications with her pregnancy and had to have an emergency cesarean section.
The twins spent months in the neonatal intensive care unit at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale before arriving home last spring.
Kristin wrote on CaringBridge that although 2013 had its ups and downs, she knows it is paving a path for such good years to come.
She told the Star News that she and Eric would like to sincerely thank all their family and friends, as well as people they don’t even know, who have helped them. She said they couldn’t have gotten through the last year without them.
“This experience has truly been humbling in all aspects,” Kristin said. “We have been taught the true meaning of faith and that love really does conquer all. We still have a long road ahead of us, but the most important thing is we are able to do it as a complete family.”
