The Elk River Elks coasted to a 73-44 win over the Coon Rapids Cardinals at home Friday evening.
Shelby Gracik scored 15 of her 16 points in the first half, including three 3-pointers, and Abi Scheid scored 14 of her 18 in the second half, to lead the Elks. Anna Rollag was next with 12 points.
The Elks started slow (it was 13-13 at one point) when Coon Rapids unexpectedly came out in zone defense.
“Once we got our feet under us and started making passes, things opened up,” said Brian Steuter, interim varsity coach. “I told the kids they did real good job adjusting to it and getting into a flow and taking control.”
The Elks showed some nice ball movement throughout the game, such as Molli Detloff lunging for a ball out of bounds on the baseline and flicking it to Scheid for an easy layup, and Gracik slicing into the lane on a fast break and kicking it out to Anna Rollag who hit a jumper.
Shayla Huffman scored 14 for Coon Rapids (1-7 conference, 2-10 overall).
Steuter, the junior varsity coach, headed the varsity for two games this week (the other was a 65-62 loss to Osseo) as head coach Reed Caouette needed a week of rest due to a health condition. Steuter said Caouette told him he’d be back Monday as expected.
The Elks are 3-6 in the conference and 6-7 overall.
