The Handke Pit is alight and bustling

This photograph taken by Elk River hockey alumnus Bruce Schmidt shows the Handke Pit outdoor hockey rink one evening last week when a youth hockey game was being played. In connection with Hockey Day Minnesota, an annual celebration of the sport hosted this year by Elk River, the Handke Pit is the venue for high school games featuring the Rogers girls vs. Chisago Lakes on Tuesday evening and the Rogers boys vs Fergus Falls on Thursday evening, an Elk alumni game on Wednesday evening, and three games on Saturday -- Rochester Lourdes vs. Cloquet boys at 10:15 a.m., Elk River vs. Stillwater boys at 1 p.m., and Elk River vs. Anoka girls at 4 p.m. The hockey rink, with extra lighting, was constructed at a cost of $24,000. Schmidt, who took this photo, played hockey and baseball for the Elks in the early 1960's and is helping to organize alumni participation in HDM.
