Hockey: Elk girls blank GRG 4-0 and Duluth 12-0 on northern trip

Elk River-Zimmerman collected two shutouts and 12 goals in a two-game sweep on the Iron Range in girls hockey on Friday and Saturday.

The Elks (10-5-3) blanked the Duluth Northern Stars (a combined team) 8-0 on Saturday. McKenna Weslow scored twice and Shae McLean, Julia Miller, Emily Heid, Abbie Canton, Drea Westgaard and Kennedi Mitchell one each. Those were the first varsity goals for McLean and Mitchell.

Wesloh, Kaylee Forster and Samantha Westgaard made two assists apiece, and McLean, Drea Westgaard, Mandy Sailor and Annie Dalton one each.

On Friday, the Elks won 4-0 at Grand Rapids-Greenway with Breanna Simon, Drea Westgaard, Raelyn Korinek and Miller notching the goals. Wesloh had two assists and McLean, Simon, Forster, and Heid one each.

Michaela Gould was in the nets with 15 saves against Duluth (9-8-1) and 21 against GRG (9-7-2).

The Elks are 3-1 against section opponents, also beating Cloquet-Esko-Carleton but losing to Andover.

Next for the Elks is Champlin Park there Tuesday.
