Basketball: Delano fends off Thunder girls 65-59

The Zimmerman Thunder had their chances but couldn’t overcome a good Delano team at home Friday evening, losing to the Tigers 65-59.
Delano’s standout 6-foot-1 wing Alex Wittinger scored 21 points and guard Brooke Lemke added 19 for the Tigers (7-3).
“We had some opportunities,” said Zimmerman coach Lance Dalbey. “We had their star (Wittinger) with four fouls with six minutes to go but we couldn’t get her out of there.”
Senior guard Lexi Funaro poured in 24 points for the Thunder (5-5). Kaitlyn Mason added 16 and Cami Bond eight.
Delano was 16-for-33 on free shots and Zimmerman was 10-for-13.
“We needed to get to the line more,” said Dalbey. “Delano struggled (at the line), but when the other team makes more than you take, it’s tough to win.”
Zimmerman also missed a number of close-range shots.
“But it was a good game against a good team,” Dalbey added.
The Thunder will play at Foley on Thursday.
