Basketball: Thunder girls halt Fairmont win streak 56-42

Lexi Funaro led with 25 points as the Zimmerman Thunder scuttled a tall, solid Fairmont Cardinals team 56-42 on Saturday at the St. Cloud Tech tournament.

The Thunder (5-4) snapped an eight-game win streak by the Cardinals (8-2).

Funaro, senior guard, was 6-for-6 at the line and 3-for-3 on 3-point shots in logging her career high. Senior forward Brooke Borchardt added 15 points as those two had 40 of the 56 points.

Team defense was the key otherwise.

“The girls worked really hard and bounced back from an ugly game on Friday,” said coach Lance Dalbey, referring to a 62-54 loss to Rocori. “They have a couple of big, strong posts, and we held them to eight and six points. Those two are their top scorers.”

Zimmerman used its staple zone defense, said Dalbey, with a couple of twists as they pinched down on the two posts.

“We wore them down, We blocked out really well and did a good job on defensive rebounding,” the coach said.

This was a bracketed event rather than a tournament. Zimmerman was slated to meet Rocori and Fairmont regardless of the outcomes of Friday’s games.

Zimmerman will host Delano on Friday.
