Basketball: Elk boys stymie Brainerd 49-29

The Elk River Elks dominated the second half against a cold-shooting Brainerd team and defeated the Warriors 49-29 at home Saturday afternoon.

Senior forward Clay Elrod had just four points at halftime with the Elks up just 21-17, but poured in 16 in the second half for a game-high 20, along with 11 rebounds. Elrod was 6-for-6 at the line and 2-for-6 on three’s.

Junior guard Mitchell Weege added 13 points for the Elks (8-2), who shot 16-for-41 from the field and 13-for-16 at the line. They were 4-for-17 on three’s.
Brainerd (4-5) made just 22 of 72 shots. Top scorers were Kobe Ahonen with nine points and Clark Hickman with eight.

Elk River will resume conference play hosting Maple Grove on Friday.
