Basketball: Park Center girls repel Elks 58-51

The Park Center Pirates pounced on a couple mistakes by Elk River down the stretch and held off the Elks 58-51 Tuesday evening on the Pirates’ court.

Sophomore center Abi Scheid poured in 26 points for the Elks (1-3 conference, 2-3 overall) but nobody else had more than six against a pesky defense by the Pirates.

Cayla McMorris, a senior forward signed by Wisconsin, scored 20 for the Pirates (3-1, 5-1). McKenna Dubois sank 12 points in the second half, hitting three of the five 3-pointers the Pirates made in the second half.

“We had a couple of key moments in the second half that went against us,” said Elk coach Reed Caouette.

One was a loose ball that the Elks appeared ready to pick up but bobbled it instead and it wound up in the hands of DuBois, who nailed a 3-pointer. Later the Elks made a steal but turned it back over right away and the Pirates parlayed it into a layup by McMorris.

Caouette praised his team for a solid defensive game, and for handling the ball fairly well for the most part against Park Center’s pressure defense.

“We needed to finish better inside,” said the coach. “We had a number of high percentage shots that just didn’t go in.”

The Elks will host Champlin Park on Thursday.

Elk River scoring — Erin Ness 5, Jayme Langbehn 3, Shelby Gracik 6, Ava Kramer 4, Gabi Haack 3, Sidney Wentland 4, Abi Scheid 26
