Basketball: Royal boys clamp down on Bemidji 89-66

The Rogers Royals dominated the first half with a stifling defense and went on to defeat Bemidji Lumberjacks 89-66 at home Friday evening.

Junior center Cole Murray sank 21 points inside for the Royals (3-1), and senior guard Sawyer Thompson sniped for 18 points, hitting 4-for-7 on 3-pointers.

Rogers led 49-20 at halftime, after shutting dow the Lumberjacks’ best shooters and forcing numbers turnovers. Bemidji outscored the Royals in the second half, hitting several 3-pointers, but were too far behind.

Issac Aanerud chipped in 10 points while Joey Simpson and Reed Sagehorn nine each. Lance Lendl notched six points and four steals while pulling down 13 rebounds, leading the Royals to a decisive 42-25 edge on the boards.

James Hendricks tossed in 22 points for Bemidji, drilling six 3-pointers.

Rogers will play at Brainerd, another section rival, on Monday evening.
