The Elk River-Zimmeman girls skated to an encouraging 2-2 tie with Maple Grove at home on Tuesday evening.
“We’ve been pretty sluggish for a week and a half, and it was nice to see the girls play this well against a good team,” said coach Joe Heasley.
All the scoring occurred within three minutes, 44 seconds late in the second period — in order, by Taylor Wente of Maple Grove, Drea Westgaard of the Elks, Summer Thibodeau of the Crimson, and Breanna Simon of the Elks, on a power play.
Assisting for the Elk goals were Julia Miller and McKenna Wesloh, respectively.
In the overtime, neither team had a strong scoring opportunity except for a rush to the net by Elk River’s Kaylee Forster for a close-range shot which MG goalie Brenna Blesi was able to block.
The Elks are 3-3-2 in conference and 3-4-2 overall. Maple Grove is 4-1-2 and 6-2-2.
Maple Grove outshot the Elks 37-29, with Elk sophomore goalie Michaela Gould holding firm with 35 saves while Blesi made 27 for the Crimson. The Elks were 1-for-6 and the Crimson 0-for-4 on power plays.
The Elks will host section rival Cloquet-Esko-Carleton on Friday evening.
