Wrestling: Royals beat Cooper, Maple Grove to open season

The Rogers wrestlers opened the season with victories over Robbinsdale Cooper 48-16 and Maple Grove 42-23 on Friday evening at Maple Grove.

Eight Royals won twice, including forfeits. They were Bret Wilson (two pins), Philip Anderson (forfeit, 1-0 decision), Connor Larson (forfeit, pin), Jordan Bond (forfeit, 8-5 decision), Tyler Eicher (6-0 decision, pin), Jordan Lemcke (two pins), Jake Owens (6-0 and 7-4 decisions), and Andrew Piehl (forfeit, pin).

“Bret Wlson came up huge with pins in his first two varsity matches, setting the tone for the team,” said coach Chris Donnay.

Anderson, ranked No. 7 at 138 in Class 3A, edged No. 9 Logan Dick of Maple Grove 1-0.

“It was a great match and I’m sure they’ll see each other tomorrow,” said Donnay, referring to his team’s return to Maple Grove on Saturday for a tournament. “That was a fun match to watch.”

Against Maple Grove, a section rival, Bond and Sam Seudbeck each won close, pivotal matches.
